This wonderful Lubusz city was a Slavic settlement a long time ago. It received the right place in 1319. It gained its fame thanks to the statue of Christ the King. Thanks to this sculpture, Świebodzin surpassed the former Brazilian capital of Rio De Janeiro. Until recently, Świebodziński Christ was the tallest monument in the world. In 2011, he was surpassed by a figure of the Pacific Christ of Peru, measuring 37 meters. Christ of Świebodzin has a height of 36 m, of which 3 m has a gilded crown crowning the monument. It stands on a 16.5 m high, artificially built mound. The weight of this giant is estimated at about 440 tons. The originator of this magnificent building on a global scale, which has become a showcase of the city, is the parish priest - the sanctuary of the Divine Mercy in Świebodzin - prelate Sylwester Zawadzki. In addition to the monument, it is worth mentioning about other great tourist attractions and monuments of Świebodzin. Such is certainly the fifteenth-century late-Gothic church of St. Michael from the 15th century, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1541. It then became a building with four naves and a row of chapels. The interior was covered with an effective network vault, in stellar and rare crystal chapels. In the nineteenth century, the church gained a neo-Gothic porch and an impressive gable with two spiers on the west facade. Inside, valuable equipment has been preserved: the late Gothic triptych of St. Anna in the main altar and the Crucifixion and the rococo altar of the Virgin Mary. An interesting feature of the Świebodzin church is its width greater than its length. Another important point of the city is the St. John's castle, whose history dates back to the fourteenth century. At that time it was probably a small wooden or partly brick stronghold. During the Renaissance, the castle was expanded by adding two more wings. To this day, there is an older remnant of the south-east wing. The building was surrounded by a wall and a moat with a drawbridge from the city side. Crosses from cannonballs embedded in the castle facade are dated to the 17th century. In 1898, the city authorities transferred the building to the Boromeusz Sisters, who established a hospital, a Catholic school and a kindergarten here. Since 1946, the castle and hospital complex has been used by the Sanatorium Rehabilitation and Orthopedics, which is well-known in the country. Another important historic element are the Świebodziń defensive walls with three towers from the beginning of the fourteenth century. At the end of the 16th century, the whole city was surrounded by walls with twelve towers and three entrance gates. The heart of the town square is a two-story town hall from the 16th century, in which the Regional Museum and the Eberhard Hilscher Library are located. The town hall has two towers crowned with battlement and facade in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. the oldest elements have survived - stone barrel vaults and brick vaults: ribbed and stellar. Finally, it is worth mentioning the architectural ensemble at Chopin Park, which consists of a neo-Gothic Evangelical church, currently a Roman Catholic parish dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland, a junior high school from 1876, a school for girls from 1869 and a court and prison from 1879 . After a walk along the streets of Świebodzin, you can relax on the bench of Czesław Niemen.
